Harriet Miers Out, Samuel Alito In

Well after a busy end for the Bush Administration last week, this week has started off with a BANG!

Oh well maybe not. The choice of Samuel Alito has left the media, groping to decide which story to follow more, the defeat of a President's Nominee or the defeat of a Vice President's old buddy, with a sort of "sigh" mode.

The Post, CNN, and Fox all have a simple "Bush chooses Alito" on their front page news. No mention of a Senate fight, nor mention of any "under the radar" stories like Miers lack of experience.

Perhaps the media is Bush'd out?
Nah look a CNN's front page now, 4pm. Rivals ready to duke it out! Tonight at 8!
Fox News is now leading with "Conservative Choice".

So after months of beating the seriousness of a SC nominee to the public, does the public really care? I don't know. After a whole year of this, I too am becoming more blase about this whole thing.
However that is very sick of me to not be concerned at all right now.

Harriet Miers, while under-expierenced and perhaps woefully unitelligent on matters of the Constitution, would have been a moderate. Not a Souter nor a Scalia.
No matter what the Republicans say, they defeated Miers with their Right wing. Don't let them fool you. The Democrats had nothing to do with it. Why? Well for starters they have done nothing but shit themselves since they heard Scooter Libby and Karl Rove could be indicted.
Its taking Bill Clinton to come back and tell the Party he once lead to grow a pair and fight. Sometimes its easier to see things from the outside.

I'll leave you all with this nugget:
IF the Right wing of the GOP was eager enough to defeat Miers, what can be said of a nominee that has their outstanding moral backing? What does that say for him/her and the direction of the nation?

Have we ever danced with the devil in the pale moon light?

Happy Halloween!!

Iran

Is it me or does Iran have this huge "Blow our ass up" sign stuck on it on the world map?

I was just watching CNN, and its ticker provided me this fun statement by Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, that Israel must be "wiped off the map". It is " move by the world oppressor (the West) against the Islamic world".
Referring to Iran's late revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Mr Ahmadinejad said: "As the Imam said, Israel must be wiped off the map."

Provided by the BBC today.

The Party doesnt stop there. Supposed the IAEA will make a new move in order to get the nuclear secrets out of Tehran.

So what if the mistake we made by invading and occupying Iraq wasn't b/c it was an illegitmate war, ,but because we took our eyes off a more real problem and now made it impossible to do anything about it?

The United States cannot win a Middle East War.

Not with the Russians backing our enemies. And hoping for Vietnam.

Breaking!*!

Reporting from the BBC is that Iraq has offically passed its new Constitution! Yippee for Democracy!

The two thirds needed to defeat the measure in the province of Nineveh was never realized as 44% of the masses voted a resounding YES.

Sunni's are talking widespread fraud, much like the Democrats did in America, however I hope it is looked into. The last thing any new democracy needs is having a bad taste of fraud in your mouth after an election. Hell we still hate the taste here, but I suspect we do some of it.

The key to this election is still this tidbit of divide, "The majority Shia community and Kurds strongly supported the constitution while the provinces where the poll was rejected by more than two-thirds of voters, Anbar and Salahuddin, are both strongly Sunni".

A religious divide is a divide most dangerous to Iraq and to the Middle East.

Congratulations Iraq. Next step soverignity.

The White House v. The Onion?

In the adminstration's infinite wisdom, the White House on September 28th, filed a cease and desist claim against the fake news organization, The Onion.

In what the White House is describing as "illegal use of a Presidential seal" it voilates a statue which states "the seal "is not to be used in connection with commercial ventures or products in any way that suggests presidential support or endorsement" Apparently the people that read the Onion at the White House mistake it for the outlet of Scott McCellean.

The Onion however shot back at the letter and claim sent to them with one from their own lawyer. "It is inconceivable that anyone would think that, by using the seal, The Onion intends to 'convey... sponsorship or approval' by the president," wrote Rochelle H. Klaskin, the paper's lawyer, who went on to note that a headline in the current issue made the point: "Bush to Appoint Someone to Be in Charge of Country."

The editor in chief also stated that he finds it amusing how the WH could find time to waste taxpayer money on this lawyer and case. He says perhaps they should use the money for tax breaks for satrists. Oh the irony! Zing!

Too close to call

Two news worthy items you won't hear or read about in the news tonight.

1) Iraq's Constitution is dangerously close to getting the failing grade after a hard two-year long push by the Americans. The BBC is reporting today that 2 provinces, Salahuddin and Anbar, so far have voted NO in favor of the new Iraqi Constitution. Both provinces are heavily Sunni and see the Constitution as a threat to their religous survival in a democratic Iraq.

The province of Diayla, also Sunni, voted in favor of the Constitution with over 50% of the vote. However the NO votes in the two defectors were of 97% and 82%. Pretty big province to turn over.

Now if 3 of the 18 provinces vote NO on this Constitution then the process will have to start again. New elections for Parliament will have to take place in December and a new Constitution will have to be created. How soon though? That is hard to say.

With the big push for progess coming from the Americans becuase of political reasons in domestic affiars, the United States set their hopes on this election being the benchmark of success. With that they/we planned on pulling out up to 50,000 troops mid-2006.

But now if Nineveh Province goes NO, which will be called in the next 2 days, the Constitution will fail. And it will be atleast 1 more year before a new Constituton will be ratified.

2) The homefront is no different in elections either. The Washington Post has a good editorial on how democracy is in voter's hands. And how redistricting could potentially be democracy's downfall.
"Modern redistricting is a travesty. Politicians, using powerful computers, design districts that all but guarantee victory to one side or another. Sure, voters can go through the motions on Election Day, but few races are more than fictions. Sometimes the process is rigged to protect incumbents, sometimes to oust them, but maximizing competition and voter choice is never the goal when politicians get to draw the districts in which they or their friends will run. The result contributes to political polarization, since heavily Democratic districts tend to elect people far more liberal than average while heavily Republican districts tend to elect people far more conservative."

And I agree whole heartedly. The editors suggest perhaps a nonpartisan commission to run districts re-shuffling. I couldn't have thought of a better idea myself. Perhaps this way will wont be be redistricting every election cycle with every new Party in power.

Just maybe.

Busted Up

This may go down as the most busted up week in current US history. Why do you ask? Well my friends let me show you.

The death toll in Pakistan is catastrophic. Nothing comes close to this much pain and suffering in 2005 to date..

Yesterday the brother-in-law of Syrian President Assad was implicated in a UN (yes they are defending some of the world) report in the assassination former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri with help from Lebanese intelligence officals. Another take on it from BBC.

What does this mean? The probable collapse of the Syrian nation as we know it. How that occurs is yet to be foretold. This is in direct violation with World and UN Human Rights and War Law. If countries, the US UK or Arab nations, wanted to strike Syria before, now they have a reason to remove those powers in Syria.

I don't believe the US will or should begin a rallying cry for war, but for justice for the Lebanese people. I think we will see a lot more of Condi Rice in Europe and in the UN HQ drafting resolutions to this latest development.

Tom Delay. Arrested.
Republican Party. Silent.

What I don't get is this contradicting statement made by his "Democrat" defense lawyer Dick DeGuerin.

"We're ready for court. We want a trial," DeGuerin said. "We've wanted to get in court for too long. There's only been one side of this being presented in any tribunal."

However in the same page, wonderful article, it acurately states "DeLay will appear in an Austin courtroom Friday, after three weeks of failed legal maneuvers by his attorney, Dick DeGuerin, to get the charges dismissed, the trial moved, the prosecutor questioned and the judge replaced."

Now I know the law and all the "supposed to get it out of court tricks" lawyers do. But if DeLay is so confindent having wanted a trial for so long, why delay it? (ah the irony)

Harriet Miers. Still busted. Much like her nomination. That woman is soo busted. I mean wtf? Ugly tree?

Let's not forget about Hurricane Wilma. She is going to bust some shit up. I'm thrilled the American media is covering natural diaster on other countries with such furor. Shame Pakistan is delegated to page 435.

more of a poll than anything else, really

Saddam's trial started...and got postponed until late November. No big surprise.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9652810/

My question is should Saddam Hussein be put to death when found guilty, or kept alive in a prison? If he's executed, would that make him a martyr? Would keeping him alive enrage thousands, leading to more problems and violence?
So many questions...I hope everything goes well for the new Iraq.

And what about Osama bin Laden? When (and if) he's found and brought to justice, should he be sentenced to death? He'd definitely be seen as a martyr to his many followers. Would that be worse than keeping him imprisoned?

Just to put things in some kind of perspective: did the families and friends of those killed in the Oklahoma City federal building get relief from the execution of Timothy McVeigh?
Yup. They did.

By the by, who's your guess for the next president?
...I sure hope Kerry runs again.

Daily headlines and such

Well it seems the Bush White House is coming down with something this week. And it may be a case of the "indictments".

according to this article by the Washington Post "special prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald has zeroed in on the role of Vice President Cheney's office, according to lawyers familiar with the case and government officials. The prosecutor has assembled evidence that suggests Cheney's long-standing tensions with the CIA contributed to the unmasking of operative Valerie Plame."

VP Cheney accused of wrong doing? What is this world coming to!? Oh the humanity!!

And I warned you all about inflation last week, well Alan "Why doesn't anybody listen to me" Greenspan has come out issuing this decree-

"Bring me women...and a new heart." Okay maybe he just warned us of the fact that energy prices will now be a huge drag on the economy. Wholesale inflation has jumped 1.9%, the largest jump since 1990, the AP is reporting.

Oh yeah and Rocky's back!! Oh snap, cue music.

400,000 Hamburgers anyone?

Well that's what the US government has on its hands in a military base in Arkansas. Well ok, more like 400,000 pieces of relief food.

The WP is reporting that roughly 400,000 packaged meals are sitting in a warehouse in Arkansas that were donated to the US by Britian as part of their relief effort for our Hurricane ravaged Gulf Coast.

The over $5.3 million of food is set to expire in early 2006, which is currently tallying up a $16,000 month storage fee while waiting to be dispersed. The problem? "Instead, because of fears about mad cow disease and a long-standing ban on British beef, the rations routinely consumed by British soldiers have sat stacked in a warehouse in Arkansas for more than a month".

The blame game to why this food has not been used, or sent to another country that has povershed needs, is afoot already.

FEMA says -" knew from e-mails the stuff was moving out there, but we never had control or said anything about it," said spokesman Kim Pease. "It was under control of" the U.S. Agency for International Development, he said.".

USAID says - "Kevin Sheridan said his agency simply provided logistic support, helping deliver to the Gulf Coast region foreign donations that were acquired by the State Department."

The State Dept has not issued a statement besides, uh we got what where?

And the British are to be reported to have said "....WTF Mate?"

Seriouisly people, first the trailers, now the food? What's next, the police departments declare martial law?

Oh yeah there's that poor old guy, the black teacher, who was beatin the living shit out of for being drun, when he hasn't had a drink in 15+ years.

I agree, with the columnist from the Miami Herald, espicially after getting chewed out by a State Trooper last nite at a football game for J-walking. I think I know how to cross a busy intersection after waiting 5 minutes to cross it Southern boy.

Some law officers are egostic power enraged manics. There are a lot of great cops out there, but there's a shit load of the bad ones. Many of those don't care about anyone if they're not middle aged white sheepish americans that awe in the sight of the law.

gimme a break.

Feel bloated? More Inflated than normal?

Well if that's the case, you wouldn't be the only one feeling slightly inflated, espicially when you look at your local grocery's selection.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, inflation may be here to stay.

"Economists expect this inflation indicator to show a rise of between 1 and 1.5 percentage points.
This would be the sharpest spike since January 1990, when the CPI rose by 1.1 percent after a cold snap in December shot energy prices higher."

I believe the bigger deal is what was stated by Bill Coleman, senior vice president of Salary.com. He stated "The firm estimates that the average worker will receive a raise equal to 3.7 percent of their current pay. But higher gasoline prices will total 3.3 percent of an individual's pay. "The good news is that people will get a raise this year; the bad news is that it's all going into the gas tank."

So what will give first high gas prices or low salaries?
I believe in this new-era of trickle down economic belief, we all know that answer. I do not believe we will see an increase from the minimum wage of $5.15 with this Congress or leadership.

Other news of note:

2005-Hottest Year Ever? Is this really an effect of global warming?

President Bush met with 11 troops in Iraq today...from the comfort of a safe bunker...in DC.

Bill "I'm the Man" Frist was subpoenaed today in regards to stock trading. Two leaders biting the dust in one month is NOT how the Moral Majority works. Or is it?

60 people were killed in a Russian raid of the city Nalchik. From Russia with love indeed. Atleast we haven't resorted to massive rebellions and raids yet in this country. Or course that'll all change with the bird flu, right Mr. President?

What the...?

I apologize for the delay in updating the daily r, as its been a looong coupla days for me. Hats off to Cance for a great thought into the whole hero debate of America.

It is true, in a sense, that the United States has gone for a very long time without a national hero. One that transended race and gender, culture and religions has not been in American lives since perhaps Roberto Clemente? And sadly the reason he is a hero is because of is sports star status. But one could also make a great case for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He was a hero.

But if we truly need inspiration I suggest, as Cance did, we should look to our teachers, local emergency responders, volunteers, chaplins, the people that make us tick.

This year is the year of "what the f*#$?" From freak tsumani's in Asia in the beginning. To straight up no WMDs and elections in Iraq that didn't work. To Hurricane-R-Us. I mean stuff is just bananas in '05.

This week to start off light we have -
NC State Athlete may be deported. What the hell people at the US ICE are thinking? Here's a kid, has been living here since 1994, has made his way through NYC PUBLIC SCHOOLS, is now attending a national recognized school, and they want to deport HIM?! You know those illegals that peddle poorer immigrants over the boarder, now those are the ICE's kinds people.

This would never have happened if he went to UNC. (i kid i kid!)

Nomar Garciaparra saved two drowning ladies in Boston's Harbor late last week. Along with his uncle Victor, Nomar jumped into the water after hearing screams and spalshes. They pulled the two out of the water and the first thing people said to arrive on the scene was "Aren't you Nomar?"

Boston...you let him go for what reason again? This man can cure cancer.

Now on the heavier note.

Over the weekend a earthquake measured at 7.3 on the Richter, has claimed over 40,000 lives in Pakistan,Kashmir, and India. I know we've all heard of this over the week so I wont rehash it.
But the lastest is it is still hard to get aid to the remote areas of the country. Think West Virginia 1720. But the weather has cleared up enough today to make it easier for aid from 30 countries to arrive, the US leading the way.

(If there is one thing i do love about America, is that we may not care with our brains or policies, but the people will come thru with their hearts.)

WTF is up with natural disasters?

Speaking of which

How can an A-bomb do good? Well it cant but a system that tells of an atomic explosion may be used to warn of tsunamis according to a California institute.

So the TV was on, and a light bulb went off

I was watching this comic the other day, and she was mentioning how she just finished reading a book, 101 Ways to Romance your Husband. "One of the ideas was when going out together, wear a badge that says 'I'm with my hero'." She went on, laughing, "if you did that - who would be more embarrassed?!"
That comment got stuck in my head, particularly because of something I've been thinking about for a long while now...

Exactly where have all our heroes gone?

Where are the 21st century George Washingtons, Martin Luther King Jr's, Rosa Parkses, Abraham Lincolns, and Susan B. Anthonys? Why are there no national figures of pride?

We as a nation have to reexamine our culture, morality, ethics, and principals. When celebrities, professional athletes, and CEOs are raking in millions of dollars, and shortages of teachers and nurses due to lack of funding keeps growing and growing...there's something that needs to change.

When did we start to support and glorify infidelity (Desperate Housewives), drug users (Snoop Dogg), criminals (Lil Kim, Martha Stewart), and all-around douchebags (Donald Trump, Diddy)?
Sadly, our government is all wrapped up in all those categories, too. DeLay, Rove, spies, unqualified appointees. Perhaps it won't happen within this administration - all hell's broken loose within Bush's White House - but hopefully, soon, someone will be able to step up and clean off America's good name.

I remember the first time I learned the press never printed a picture of FDR in his wheel chair or using his crutches while he was in office. They, like everyone else, had such an overwhelming respect for the president, his office, and his accomplishments, they never wanted to see his weaknesses. I was so utterly impressed, and now I wonder about the media - about their role in our society: their constant presence, incessant noise, countless jabs, attacks, and fake concern. News channels thrive on revealing flaws, to tear down could-be heroes. And we eat it up. In our strive for equality, we're eager to learn no one else is better than us.

I think that's wrong. Everyone needs someone to inspire them, to make them self aware, to make them do better. If no one thought Jesus was so special, we wouldn't have Christianity, would we? If you ask me, without heroes, life's gonna get very Harrison Bergeron-esque.

Of course there are the unsung heroes in life - police, firefighters, good parents, kind friends, teachers, doctors, and the occasional four legged pal. But it's sad to think these people don't get the credit they deserve.

Maybe it is a good idea after all to wear "I'm with my hero" badges. A hero is very hard to come by nowadays...you shouldn't be embarrassed.

Too much to write about today

I mean whoa nelly. Everywhere today from gas prices, to judicial nominees, to Wal-Mart, to well the world!

First off a wierd but helluva scary story from good ole NC. (I found it thru Kos) A high school social studies teacher directed her students to do a Bill of Rights Project, having to use a picture to describe one right they have because of it. So a student, whose idenity is being kept confidential, took a picture of GWB, put a red thumbtack on his forehead, and took his picture with it...with his thumbs down. He then has it developed at Wal-Mart. And thats when it all goes to crap.

"But over at the Kitty Hawk Wal-Mart, where the student took his film to be developed, this right is evidently suspect. An employee in that Wal-Mart photo department called the Kitty Hawk police on the student. And the Kitty Hawk police turned the matter over to the Secret Service. On Tuesday, September 20, the Secret Service came to Currituck High."

The Secret Service then came to Carrituck HS around 1:35pm and removed his poster from the classroom, ,without the teacher even knowing. After a much need agrument with "the man", teacher Selina Jarvis was told "the incident would be interpreted by the U.S. attorney, who would decide whether the student could be indicted".

Wha?? This is what happens when the nation is governed by fear and not rationale. Everyone's a threat, no one is beyond suspect. I'm sorry tho. When was the last time a teenager orchestrated and killed a President?

Speaking of the President Bush. And I mean the President not the crazy military wacko he's today. The man could give Hugo Chavez a run for his money this week.
Remember that silly Bird Flu I talked about last week? Yeah the one that could kill 150 million people worldwide if it mutates? Well apparently President Bush headed my warning....(okay maybe some intern did.) The President has the new idea of issuing federal troops to provide law enforcement to the States to prevent outbreak. In a total slap to the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, ,the federal government would use troops to maintain law and order. Now isn't that what seperates us from the Empire we fought dearly to be free of? Well according nto sources close to the adminstration, that wasn't the case. We actually fought to become a free Judeo-Christian nation. Thus the slaves.

While taking his lumps on protecting the country from the Bird Flu, President Bush is also getting his turn at the whack-a-mole from his recent nominee Harriet Miers. The conservative George Will writes in today's Washington Post about how we should question the rationale behind this appointee.

"It is not important that she be confirmed because there is no evidence that she is among the leading lights of American jurisprudence, or that she possesses talents commensurate with the Supreme Court's tasks. The president's "argument" for her amounts to: Trust me. There is no reason to, for several reasons.

He has neither the inclination nor the ability to make sophisticated judgments about competing approaches to construing the Constitution. Few presidents acquire such abilities in the course of their pre-presidential careers, and this president particularly is not disposed to such reflections."

I agree with George. George Will that is. Why should "Trust me I know this lady and how'll she'll vote" be enough for us? For the republicans too? Its not. It is not a reasonable justification of a nomination for Supreme Court Justice. Its tantamount to "Hey I know this guy, he's needs a job. He's a great guy, he'll fit right in." That shit flys in Targets and Gap's, not in the federal government. Espicially when you look at FEMA and Brownie.

Conservatives should and must be weary of this nominee. Unless you want to go down as the party of the political corrupt for the super rich, reject this nominee, and demand someone of quality. And someone with oh I don't know, how did Cance say it, EXPERIENCE? Not just someone who has a strong faith and pocket ties to the elites. Which is what the hyper-right want, but you the real conservatives must prevent.

When Focus on the Family, which has ties to one contributor here at the DR, founder James Dobson knows more about the nominee than the people of the United States and her Senators, than yes we have a problem. Why Mr. President would a religious conservative know more about the nominee and then say to the press "I'm not at liberty to talk about it"? What us worry?

Oh and gas here in NC is currently the record high for all 48 land locked states! Woohoo! Its partially the State's fault with the fifth current highest gas tax in the country at .27 cents, and the Governor won't even temporarially repeal it because of all the income we would lose.

Way to step up to the plate for your constinuents Governor. Keep hitting us twice. At the pump and in the wallet. Can we give Jim Hunt a call? In the mean time I encourage all you locals to contact your state rep's. Here's the NC General Assembly's homepage and directory. I called both my State reps and my US Rep. Some emails will be sent as well. They are often very nice on the phone, as were mine today, so dont be afriad of them.

Left jab...Right Hook?!

That is what it must feel like to be the Commander in Chief this week. President Bush has been hit from the side he least expected it on with the appointment of Grandma Moses this week, the Right. The President held a afternoon press conference today in order to drain some venom from his own party's critism of Harriet Miers. What can be certain is that after Hurricane Ka-Rita and the indictment of Tom DeLay and not to mention slipping poll numbers, is the the rank-and-file GOP are beginning to do some listening.

Can Bush recover? I don't think so. If he was going to recover from this, he would have shored up his base with this nominee. He would have created an independent commission into Hurricane Katrina. And he would have asked DeLay to take it easy and not act like a pre-Madonna. ""This is an abomination of justice." WTF?!? Who are you to call this an abomination of justice? I mean hell I think the last guy on Texas Death Row said the same thing.

Speaking of which I need to go run some money to the Laundromat. (vid)

But some of them are hearing the advice of a different group of people this year. Its the party's moderates.
With the Hammer looking down the barrel of jail time, the Boss (Karl Rove) also looking at federal indictments, and the Prez being labeled by bi-partisan media (yahoo) as a political crony, the GOP is leaning back to not moderate...but more of a "holy shit" mode. Its sad that conservatives are "deflated" "demoralized" by this nomination. But hey what do you expect when you put someone with NO JUDICIAL EXPERIENCE up for the Highest Court in the Land. I'm sad too. In that Bush is trying again to pull the wool over everyone, not just liberals, eyes.

I think moderate conservatives, many of you reading this, have a right to be worried. It took the GOP 40 years to get out of the political woods and return to power in 1996. It took a great effort by both the middle and the far right to attain to where the party is today. However that being said, what has happened since 2001 is the highjacking of the GOP by the far-right and the religious zealots. It has taken you, the Republican Party, 5 years to destroy what took 40. You have become the very thing you fought against when you went up to DC.

You have become bloated with government. Corrupt with money and "inner circles." And insane and vindictive with power. I.E. Rush Limbaugh, Tom DeLay, Bill Frist. Fix your party people.

Meanwhile the Democrats, well the democratic people, are looking to this collapse in the GOP's house as a godsend. It seems and with good cause that because of this latest string of foul ups by everyone in political power, the Left can win back the House in 2006. Not only that but people are eyeing the Senate as well. Now I believe that will never happen. The DNC is destined for a major upheaval and spilt.

The DNC has even more problems than the GOP. They are out of power, act like spoiled dummies on air, and have no political or moral backbone to stand up for themselves. Until some one new or currently in the DNC steps up to the plate and pulls a Jefferson, the entire country will be hurting for a long long time. Roll around 2006 and 2008, if the Blue's do not do anything different, then they will not win much.
The GOP noise machine elected Bush TWICE. You've ben burned by the guy who invaded a country for no reason, appointed political friends to the Supreme Court, hired Karl Rove to do his PR, told Colin Powell to get lost, told Karen Hughes to put makeup on America's image in the Middle East, and drove our economy and paychecks into the ground with tax-cuts for the rich and the attempted reappealing of the estate tax. (Bloomberg son..BLOOMBERG!)

Inaction and our apathy is the greatest threat to our vitality.

The New $10 Bling:: Coming to a back pocket near you!

On a Side Note:
Let me just say, this is probably the best movie news I've heard since, well the end of Star Wars! Peter Jackson, Director of LOTR, is to direct the new Halo movie slated to drop in the summer of 2007.

I think...I think I just crapped myself.

Who is Grandma Moses?

The answer is Harriet Miers. It was reported earlier this morning that President Bush had selected his next pick to succeed Justice O'Connor and it was a girl!

Here's a slight peak at who is Grandma Moses:
"Miers received her bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1967 and JD in 1970 from Southern Methodist University. Upon graduation, she clerked for U.S. District Judge Joe E. Estes from 1970 to 1972. In 1972, Miers became the first woman hired at Dallas's Locke Purnell Boren Laney & Neely.
In March 1996, her colleagues elected her the first woman president of Locke, Purnell, Rain & Harrell, at that time a firm of about 200 lawyers. She became the first woman to lead a Texas firm of that size.
Locke, Purnell eventually merged with a Houston firm and became Locke Liddell & Sapp, LLP, where Miers became co-managing partner of an over-400-lawyer firm.
Miers had a very distinguished career as a trial litigator, representing such clients as Microsoft, Walt Disney Co. and SunGard Data Systems Inc
."

Two key issues of importance in relation to Miers. 1- She is 60 years old. Which means she will not, but possibly, serve as long as the new Chief Justice Roberts. 2- She has never been a judge before. Which means she has no track record on issues or ideology besides this Republican bullshit of "will not legislate from the bench."

Miers should be a interesting fight in the Senate Judiciary Committee. I do not believe she will have the ease that Roberts did because no one can say they know excatly how'll she judge. With Roberts the GOP memebers fell back on his record to shout down the calls for more in-depth questioning of the nominee. With Meirs, it should be a different case.
The Republicans do not have facts/rulings to back up their justifying that the nominee has spoken through past events. If Miers is not questioned more throughly than it would be a mockery of the whole process and our democracy.

I have more I want to address, but alas work calls.

Yankees AL EAST Champions!!! Here come the playoffs and the Red Sox getting bounced by the other pair of Sox.
NY Jets....Just End The Season. Ah we'll be okay, P. Rivers will lead us soon to the holy land. Or then i'll panic.
