As rosy as 2006 has been, the future of America greatly depends on how this year plays out. Since the turn of the century, more and more events have occured that threaten our nation's progress at home and aboard. the diaster of
Hurricane Katrina showed America we still live in two countries, one for the
haves and one for the have nots. The ruling of private use for emminet domian threatens the fibers of public interest. Iraq has become the line in the sand for America's great ideological divide.
Intelligent design in public schools harks on the passion of the abortion fight to further
split the country into hated sides. Iran's unwillingness to be transparent with its nuclear technologies,
Hamas controling Palestine, China and Russia ready and able to make the Middle East our next Vietnam all could further destroy our place as a leader in world affairs.
The world we face is becoming far worse each day.
And with
health care costs up 4x by some reports, gas for cars and homes up 2x, and the
minimum wage and payroll for Americans buying less than it could in 1993, we may have no shelter here. The front line is everywhere.
Yet when given the opportunity to straighten our ship, their ship, his ship; President G.W. Bush, of the Republican Party, would rather use the chance to further false truths and pointless chit chat.
When addressing concerns about his domestic spying program, President Bush stated that::
"
It is said that prior to the attacks of September the 11th, our government failed to connect the dots of the conspiracy. We now know that two of the hijackers in the United States placed telephone calls to Al Qaeda operatives overseas. But we did not know about their plans until it was too late. So to prevent another attack -- based on authority given to me by the Constitution and by statute -- I have authorized a terrorist surveillance program to aggressively pursue the international communications of suspected Al Qaeda operatives and affiliates to and from America."
Fact: According to the Sept. 11 commission's report, released in 2004, the NSA first identified Alhazmi and Almihdhar in December 1999, passing the information to the CIA but conducting no further research.
In 2000, the CIA failed to place Alhazmi and Almihdhar on a watch list despite their ties to a terrorist summit in Malaysia. The CIA also mishandled efforts to follow them after the summit and failed to share information about them with the FBI, including the crucial fact that both men had U.S. visas, the commission found.
It has been by lack of communication between law enforcement in the CIA and FBI that Sept. 11th occured. It is a fact. Thus when asked for a Homeland Security Czar, President Bush was granted one to help sort out this knd of problem. (Article at Media Matters.org)
Now he says its becuase we never had the infomation in the first place? So he needs warrantless wiretaps of any American? These laws will be in effect long after President Bush is gone. This is not about him, but about protecting our republic.
The President also states that to secure America we must follow one path of radical thought over the other. "In a complex and challenging time, the road of isolationism and protectionism may seem broad and inviting, yet it ends in danger and decline," Bush said. "The only way to protect our people, the only way to secure the peace, the only way to control our destiny is by our leadership." Now replace "leadership" with military meddling and you have an imperial apporach. So its either 1800s isolationism, a calling card of old 1990 Republicans, or 2000s agressive leadership against all economic and social conflicts overseas?
I guess I just see a middle ground in there somewhere. But hey I could be nuts.
And finally the
best statement of the night "America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world." All I can think of is the swet irony that a former oil executive, with ties to illegal meetings with oil and western power companies to determine energy policy, and son of an oil/gas fortune, telling America "Hey ya'll I'm sorry we all sold you down the river and got you addicted for a few bucks, but ya'll need to quit now." Aside from the outlandish remarks that Iraq is a war for oil, which still who knows it could be, this is priceless. Lest you forget the President did raise $2,596,725 from Oil and Gas
officals in 2004. (Kerry, duh, didn't have a
friend. )
While true is his statement, President Bush is only acting your father who tells you not to ever smoke cigarettes, but puffs a whole pack during dinner after getting off from his job at Marlboro.
Sadly the whole speech was reactionary. Nothing in it was visionary or progressive. At least last year he came forth with the truth of Social Security. Even if the total idiots at the DNC killed the issue to save it for the greedy selves in 2008.
